Is Barack Hussein Obama a Muslim?

There has been, as of late, a lot a of  smear campain about president hopeful senator Barak Hussein Obama, Jr as being a “closet muslim” and that he went to an Islamic “madrassa” school as a child. So are these reports true? Or is it just a stunt by the opposition to malign him?

Obama’s middle name is Hussein named after his late, estranged father who was of Muslim descent. It has been touted in media that as his father was of Muslim descent, he also is a Muslim. Moreover, Obama’s stepfather is also a Muslim. Obama asserts that both his father and stepfather were "non-practicing" Muslims. In fact, Obama describes his father as "agnostic". His mother, he says, was a Christian. Although Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. was raised a Muslim, he had become a "confirmed atheist" by the time he attended college. When Obama's mother remarried, it was to an Indonesian man named Lolo Soetoro, whom Obama describes as a "non-practicing" Muslim.

There have also been reports that Obama studied in a madrasa or religious school while he was in Indonesia. Obama has stated that his “secular” sent him to both Catholic and Muslim primary schools. There is nothing on record to indicate Obama attended a madrassa. In fact, a CNN report in Jakarta shows the allegations that Obama attended a madrassa to be false. The channel also tracked down the school in question, the Basuki School in Jakarta. Hardi Priyono, a deputy headmaster, described the school as a public school with no particular religious agenda.
