John Edwards Children SurrogateTwo of the four children of presidential candidate senator John Edwards are from surrogate mothers. John married fellow law student Elizabeth Anania in 1977. Their first two, Wade and Cate , were born soon after John and Elizabeth's marriage. In 1996, while coming to meet his parents, 16-year-old Wade was killed in a weather related car accident. Wade’s death crushed the Edwards and the trauma transformed their lives. John Edwards, a personal-injury lawyer wanted his son to join him in his law practice. After Wade’s tragic death John stopped his thriving law practice and embarked on the political career. Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth Edwards turned from bankruptcy law to volunteer work. They donated a computer lab to the school where Wade used to study and set up many scholarship programs in his memory. To overcome the tragedy, Edwards and his wife, who had 22 year old daughter Cate, chose to have children again. In their words, "How is it that we reintroduce joy to our life? It was an easy answer. Children give us joy". Soon after, in 1998, when Elizabeth was 49 years old, Emma Claire was born via a surrogate mother. In 2000, when Elizabeth was 51 years, Edwards couple’s fourth child, Jack was also born via surrogacy. |
