On March 9, 2006, John Cox announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for U.S. President in 2008, becoming the first Republican to formally enter the presidential race. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Cox has served as president of the Cook County Republican Party and was on the state steering committee for former Housing Secretary Jack Kemp's presidential run in 1988. John Cox believes he is the "only real conservative running for president". He does not support the proposed surge of 21,500 troops to Iraq by President Bush. According to Cox, the United states cannot rely forever on oil for its energy needs. Cox advocates a diversification of energy resources to include nuclear power, creating more wind, solar and bio-diesel energy. John favors favors "less taxes and free market approaches to solving our problems". He also wants to crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants, and encouraging the Iraqis to pay for their own reconstruction with oil revenues. Since the campaign began, Cox has visited all 99 counties in Iowa, and according to a schedule posted on his Website, he continues to make almost monthly visits there. He is the author of Politics, Inc, which advocates changing American politics by fostering the principles of statesmanship in elected officials.
