Former Governor George Pataki is a a challenger for the 2008 Republican Presidential Nomination. A year ahead of George Bush at Yale University during their undergraduate years, Pataki was one of the people who had helped pull New York through the horror of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
During his tenure as Governor of New York, Pataki committed himself to making the streets safer, and restoring New York's economy with pro-business policies. Governor Pataki's tax cuts provided New Yorkers with over $140 billion in tax relief. His economic policies as Governor resulted in the creation of approximately 700,000 new private sector jobs in New York State.
Pataki has also called for increases in spending at the State University of New York and City University of New York. He has demanded for laws to limit the amount of time a student can receive state tuition assistance while in a public university.
Pataki's reputation as an environmentalist will stand him in good stead during the election. He has made the environment and open space preservation a top priority of his administration. He has often been quoted as echoing Theodore Roosevelt's views and philosophy on conservation.
