Michael Charles Smith filed papers with the Federal Election Commission in March 2006, making him an official candidate for the 2008 presidential election. Born in Illinois in 1961, Smith is virtually unknown outside of oregon. Smith attended the University of Illinois before joining the Air Force in 1985.
In his own words, Smith is "a Republican who is frustrated that the most prominent voices of the Republican Party are those of the extreme right and religious fundamental community". Smith is also in favor of gay marriages and medical assisted suicide, critical of the Patriot Act, and supports replacing the current federal income tax with a national sales tax. He describes himself as a "zealous moderate."
Smith supports major tax reform based on the FairTax Act. According to him, the Fair Tax Act embodies simplicity, fairness, and freedom. He wants to see a moderate discussion within his Party that reflects the views of the people more accurately.
