Charles Timothy Hagel is a leading Republican senator. Hagel served in Vietnam as an infantry sergeant and is now the second-ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Though he voted to authorize the invasion of Iraq, he has been an outspoken critic of the administration's management of the war.
Since his election to the Senate in 1996, Hagel has been chair of both the Senate Global Climate Change Observer Group and the Senate Oversight Task Force. He also serves on the NATO Observer Group. Hagel has served on the Board of Trustees Manville Personal Injury Settlement Trust and as Chairman of the Agent Orange Settlement Fund. He has actively participated in civic, educational, and charitable organizations.
Hagel believes that the U.S. "misunderstood, misread, misplanned and mismanaged our honorable intentions in Iraq with an arrogant self-delusion reminiscent of Vietnam." He says that said sending more U.S. troops would not accomplish the goal of bolstering the weak Iraqi government. He is in favor of laying the groundwork for a "phased withdrawal" of U.S. troops.
Hagel is married to Lilibet Ziller since 1985; the couple live with their daughter, Allyn, and son, Ziller in Great Falls, Virginia.
