Juvenile Delinquency
Today’s teens are much different than the teens of 1950. Back then, parents worried more about their teens not finishing their homework on time and maybe smoking a cigarette or two. In today’s society, smoking cigarettes is certainly not the worst thing children are engaging in. Juvenile delinquency occurs frequently, and on many different levels. There are many ways to get the ongoing rise of juvenile delinquency under control.
The number one thing the government can do to help improve the nation’s juvenile delinquency problem is to work closely with parents on the issue. Prevention is key to eliminating the problem. However, if the child is already showing negative behavior, there are steps to take as well. Many parents choose to ignore the problem, feeling as if there is nothing they can do to stop the behavior. There are steps parents can take to get their children back on track. Tough love is often necessary and treatment programs for drug use and violence are available.
With the government giving less slack to the juvenile delinquents and filling in the holes of the system, teens would be less likely to act out. If they know they will go to jail for breaking the law, they will be less likely to break the law. However, if they think they will get off with a “slap on the wrist”, they will be more likely to challenge the rules and break the limits. Treatment programs, juvenile camps, and other options are available today and should be utilized more.
