Physical Education
Physical education for children once meant playing outside after school each day, walking home from the park, or even riding bikes with friends in the neighborhood. However, today children are playing inside with video games, getting picked up by their parents from school, and few are even learning to ride bicycles. Physical education is something many families are putting aside in favor of other activities. However, the importance of physical education is still vital.
What happens in terms of physical education in the home is something that government cannot control. However, what happens at school in terms of physical education is more approachable by the government. To ensure that all students are getting the proper amount of physical education in their lives, the government can help improve physical education at school.
One thought is to require high school PE each year. Currently, most schools only require a high school student to take one semester of physical education. However, high school students are increasingly overweight or obese. In fact, high school aged children are at pivotal points in their lives. Their self esteem is being molded and if they are unhealthy, they will not feel good about themselves.
Another idea is to fuel school systems with ways to make physical education fun for children. Using new tools and updated ideas, children can have a blast and stay fit all at the same time. New dance machines that allow children to dance to the beats shown on a screen are examples of things to introduce.
