Computer Crime
Republican lawmakers have a strong history of fighting crime in all of its incarnations, and with the growing popularity of the Internet and more and more businesses using the World Wide Web for e-commerce, it is not surprising that computer crime has become a new focus for these lawmakers. Whether it is the crime of embezzlement, credit card fraud, identity theft, or swindle, the sad reality is that the ‘Net can be misused for a whole host of nefarious applications.
For Republicans, this is only the tip of the iceberg, and the fact that government agencies are geared toward protecting the American computer user from those on the Internet who would prey on them without scruples is a welcome knowledge to all those who have been burned by the online crooks or know someone who has.
While copyright infringements may not affect many of us in our lifetimes, the sale of counterfeit pharmaceuticals will indeed have a larger impact on many. Add to this the exploitation of children that is often accomplished with the help of the Internet, and it is a common sense notion that Republicans are on the right track to protect and serve the online user. At this stage it is quite possibly the right time to hand some of the reigns to the individual states for follow up and follow-through. Most everyone will acknowledge that the federal government should continue working on those issues that affect the American people as a whole, while the individual state governments will be most effective when working on issues that affect the states in question.
