Justice
Justice is oftentimes depicted a being a blind-folded maiden holding scales in the balance. What many citizens of this great country appear to have forgotten is that the scales do not simply represent guilty and not guilty, but instead also refer to the moral or amoral outcome of a case. No longer blindfolded, it now appears that lady justice is keeping at least one watchful eye on the public sentiments, especially when it comes to the popularity of a certain person, group, or even ethnicity involved in a case.
Republicans have been guilty of caving to the pressures of those in society who would want lighter sentences, and even a dismissal of charges for those that have been historically perceived as being disadvantaged. Add to this the inherent inability to square the philosophical approach to justice with the practical allocation thereof, and it is not at all surprising that it is harder and harder to discern what is just and equitable.
Perhaps the best way to remedy this situation is for Republicans to get back to the basics of right and wrong, and to stop the political twitching that is tempting them to ride the tide of public approval and avoid the crashing waves of public disapproval. Public sentiment changes over the course of decades, but the basic concepts of right and wrong do not and the Republican movement as a whole will do well to remember this fact. This will ensure their personal and the party’s integrity for generations yet to come.
