Police
The police force is the one element that stands between the average citizens and those who are determined to break the laws of the land either out of carelessness or for personal gain. Crime can take a large variety of forms, but quite often the crimes that affect citizens are those of a personal nature, such as being robbed, attacked, raped, and injured during the commission of another crime. Property-crimes leave those affected often feel violated, helpless, and in desperate need of help to put the pieces of their lives back together. It is the police force whom the citizens of this country have entrusted with the task of bringing perpetrators to justice.
In the day and age of terrorism, the police serve another very important function: homeland security. Yet in the recent past the police have gotten a bad reputation - racial tensions have skyrocketed, and accusations of police brutality have once again reared their ugly heads. While the Republican knee jerk reaction has been in the past to allocate more funding for training, the new breed of Republican politicians are beginning to recognize that not each and every allegation of police misconduct is warranted.
As a matter of fact, it is time for all citizens to let go of the contrived enemy image with which the police force has been labeled, and return to an understanding of the hardship the officers have to endure on a day by day basis. Add to this a good dose of police reform and department mergers, and you will have a winning combination for everyone involved!
