Prostitution
Perhaps the greatest falsehood surrounding the debate that centers on the legalization of prostitution is the thought that it is a victimless crime and as such it should be made legal. Many so-called progressive voices are pointing toward the Netherlands, Germany and also France, where prostitution is legal, and has even attained the status of a business occupation with its own set of licenses and regulations.
Republican leaders have recognized that while the act of selling sex for money or other goods does not have to be exploitative in each and every case, by and large it is a form of taking advantage of a woman’s inability to make ends meet financially in any other way. Going one step further, many have come to the conclusion that even the legalization of prostitution – although favored by many in the business – does precious little but simply encourage the repeated rape of a woman for the sake of money.
Granted, driving the prostitutes into the underground by repeated sting operations is just as counter-productive as legalizing the act of buying and selling a woman’s dignity, yet where perhaps the education needs to take place is in the minds of those who believe that it is acceptable to act as though a woman could be purchased simply for the sexual enjoyment of a man. Thus, instead of enforcing seemingly unenforceable laws, it will be up to Republican legislators to find a middle ground in the fight against prostitution. Only then will women truly be free from sexual exploitation.
