Cigarettes
Cigarettes contain dozens of harmful chemicals known to be directly linked to different types of cancer, and lead to low birth rate, emphysema, and other deleterious effects. The legal age to smoke a cigarette in the United States is 18 years of age. From that point on, people are able to present identification and purchase any tobacco product that they wish.
On the other hand, teenage smoking is an at all time high as well. A large portion of smokers in this country are under the legal smoking age of 18 years old, and the legal age does not seem to make a difference to people anymore. Cigarettes lead to life threatening diseases that cost everybody money, and the unfortunate part of that is that some people pay the ultimate price--they pay with their lives.
Although legislation has been passed regarding cigarette ads being geared toward kids has helped to decrease the common nature of cigarettes in today’s society. However, the fact remains that cigarette smoking is still viewed as cool, and in many places you may find more people who smoke than those who do not. It is an expensive and nasty habit, and second hand smoke kills just as many people as plain cigarettes do.
Legislation must be stricter regarding cigarettes. This means stricter consequences for those who are caught with tobacco underage and proper education about the dangers of cigarettes.
