Drunk Driving
Drunk driving has been the cause of millions of automobile accidents, especially those in which young people are involved. Steps need to be taken to address this situation, because the current drunk driving laws are not doing the trick. People are still drinking and driving and people are still dying every day as a result of it.
What can we do as a nation to rid ourselves of the scourge of drunk driving? There are many theories about this, ranging from stricter criminal laws to counseling. Drunk driving is like attempted murder in a vehicle; whether or not a person thinks they have control of the situation is not really a factor, as alcohol impairs judgment. The fact that judgment has been impaired accounts for the reasons why logic usually fails those who are convicted of the crime--those lucky ones who did not hurt somebody or themselves before they were caught.
As a nation, our lawmakers could propose stricter consequences for those who drink and drive, and even stricter consequences for repeat offenders and others who just will not cease their dangerous activities. People’s lives are at stake and drinking and driving is a threat to our newer generations, posing a threat to the lives of millions of people out there who do practice safe driving habits. Counseling is also an option, but more realistic for first time offenders. Sometimes reality is enough for people and this is when counseling is one of the more realistic options and one of the more realistic solutions to drinking and driving as one of our problems.
