FDA
The FDA is an organization that Americans look to for guidance and information. Many Americans refuse to use any products not regulated by the FDA. However, many Americans don’t realize that the FDA is not without its own problems. The good news is that many of the problems the FDA is facing can be fixed. The bad news is that it can take years to get these issues resolved. In addition, if the health experts at the FDA and their partners are not willing to get through the problems, nothing will change and Americans will be getting the same second-class information they are getting today.
The recent news by the U.S. Government Accountability Office that the FDA is not adequately monitoring postmarket drug safety was alarming to many citizens. The truth is that even after drugs are released onto the market, problems can arise. Many consumers see popular drugs being recalled after only a year on the market. Sure, the drug recalls are the proper steps to take. However, before the drug is recalled there are many patients who are ill, develop major medical complications, or even die, due to the medication.
At this time, the government needs to be more active with the mega-pharmaceutical companies that create the drugs. Together, a system of drug safety should be established. A system that tracks drug safety data, even after the drugs are released, is vital.
One of the main concerns being discussed is the issue of consumer drug ads. Studies claim that commercials on TV for specific drugs often show unrealistic expectations to patients.
