Religion in Schools
Religion in the schools has become the great battle cry of secular progressives and religious conservatives. The former want to see all mentioning of any god eradicated from schools and on school properties, while the latter are advocating school prayer and faith based curricula. The former are fighting the idea of having children recite the Pledge of Allegiance with the phrase “under God” in it, while the latter want Christian prayer rooms specially dedicated for the students.
Religion in the schools needs to be handled pretty much the same way that religion in the town square should be handled – teachers should neither encourage nor discourage their students. If students wish to form prayer clubs, they need to have the school administration’s support to do so. On the other side, if students wish to have no part of these prayer groups, then the school administration needs to ensure that no teacher is pushing students to attend or join.
Obviously, the latest craze of political hypercorrectness has gone too far, and the very notion that “God” is a dirty word in school is completely out of hand. At the same time, political correctness has demanded that other religions be given a form of equal play to Christianity, yet instead of introducing students to other beliefs, they have been subjected to active participation in rites and role-play that many have felt uncomfortable with. Republicans understand that religion and school can go hand in hand, but only if the exercise of religion is an individual choice of the student that is in no way influenced by a teacher.
